Jonas Orset Takes on the Valley of Tears: A Grit-Filled Ride Through Sand, Snow and Mud

In the heart of West Texas, where the land is as unforgiving as it is beautiful, Jonas Orset tackled one of the most grueling gravel races in the U.S.—the Valley of Tears Gravel Race. Representing CCN Sport, Orset faced an unpredictable course filled with deep sand, sticky mud, biting cold, and relentless winds.
A Race Through the Wild West
Set in Turkey, Texas, this event is more than just a race—it’s a true battle against the elements. The 94-mile course takes riders through historic landscapes, past bison-filled state parks, endless gravel roads, and challenging terrain that demands both physical and mental resilience.
For Orset, the challenge began even before the main race. A high-intensity gravel criterium the night before set the stage, forcing riders to navigate sharp corners on loose gravel at full gas. Fast, aggressive, and unpredictable, it was an introduction to the chaos that lay ahead.
The Main Event: Sand, Snow & Survival
Waking up to a dramatic temperature drop, Orset knew this wouldn’t be a typical gravel race. The day before, conditions had been mild; race morning brought freezing temperatures and snowfall, transforming the course into a brutal mix of wet sand and thickening mud.
Just three miles in, Orset found himself battling for position as riders struggled through the first deep sand section. The wrong line meant losing momentum, and with legs already burning, it was a fight to stay in contention.
As the race unfolded, Orset faced:
Relentless headwinds stretching across endless gravel trails
Sudden snowfall, turning fast roads into slick, treacherous paths
Mud-packed sections, forcing riders to make quick decisions on tire clearance and grip
Despite the grueling conditions, Orset powered through, adapting to every obstacle the course threw at him.
Built for the Challenge: Racing in CCN Sport Gear
Taking on a race like the Valley of Tears demands not just endurance, but the right gear. Jonas Orset raced in a CCN Sport custom gravel kit, designed to withstand extreme conditions:
Breathable, moisture-wicking fabric – Staying dry in fluctuating temperatures
Aerodynamic yet durable fit – Balancing speed with all-terrain resilience

With CCN Sport apparel, Orset stayed focused, comfortable, and race-ready despite the punishing environment.
The Finish Line & What’s Next
After nearly 100 miles of suffering, Orset crossed the finish line in 18th place, smiling despite the exhaustion. The experience wasn’t just about the result—it was about embracing the challenge, pushing limits, and gaining experience for the season ahead.
“I wish I could have experienced more of it. I wish I were in better shape to stay with the front group," Orset reflected post-race. "That just means I’ll be back next year—stronger and ready for the full 94-mile challenge.”
The Road Ahead
With the Valley of Tears in the books, Orset now shifts focus to more gravel races in 2025, continuing to push the limits of what’s possible on two wheels.
At CCN Sport, we stand behind riders who dare to take on the toughest conditions. Whether racing through the desert, the mountains, or the snow, we make sure our athletes have the gear to perform.
