Joel Morales Secures Torres-Sobato’s First Spanish Cup Podium

The journey to victory is never easy, but it is always worth it. For Torres-Sobato, perseverance and determination have paved the way to their first cup podium finish of the season at the XXXIV Trofeo Guerrita, the third round of the Copa España Elite-Sub23. Racing through the Region of Murcia, the team’s efforts were finally rewarded as Joel Morales sprinted to victory in the Flying Goals classification.
A Tactical Battle on the Roads of Murcia
As expected, the Guerrita Trophy began with an intense fight for intermediate sprints. Torres-Sobato executed their strategy flawlessly, with Joel Morales and Edgar Mesa breaking into a lead group of four riders. With his remarkable speed, the Argentine rider secured two top finishes, ultimately sealing his triumph in this classification.
The race’s mountainous terrain tested the endurance of the peloton, yet five Torres-Sobato riders managed to hold their positions among the leading group. Asger Paaske, the team’s highest-placed finisher, crossed the line in 53rd place, showcasing the team's resilience in an elite field.
A Setback and a Strong Comeback
However, the race was not without its challenges. Callum Twelves, one of Torres-Sobato’s British riders, suffered a severe crash while descending the La Perdiz mountain pass, less than 100 kilometers from the finish line. He was immediately taken to a hospital in Murcia, where medical examinations confirmed a minor muscle injury in his quadriceps, with no fractures or major damage. While a setback, Callum’s spirits remain high, and he is on the road to recovery.
Morales Reflects on a Hard-Fought Victory
Following his podium finish, Joel Morales shared insights into the team's strategy and his personal triumph:
“One of our main objectives was securing the intermediate sprint victories, and we were ready for any attack that could break away. Once Edgar (Mesa) and I got into the lead group, it was all about managing our efforts. Thanks to my teammate’s support, I could focus on executing my sprints effectively. From that point, we worked together, knowing that the toughest part of the race was still ahead.”
Looking Ahead
With this achievement, Torres-Sobato has once again demonstrated their strength and tactical discipline. This podium finish marks the beginning of what promises to be an exciting season, as the team continues to chase success in the Copa España Elite-Sub23.
