Gerhard Modansky Returns to His Roots at the Bikexpert Alpine Challenge 2024

After a long season spent racing on the road, Gerhard Modansky made a triumphant return to the trails at the Bikexpert Alpine Challenge 2024. This switch from road racing to mountain biking wasn’t part of the original plan, but it turned out to be a refreshing and rewarding change for Gerhard, who embraced the challenge with excitement and determination.

Back to the Trails

With a weekend off from road racing, Gerhard decided to jump back into the mountain biking scene by competing in the final race of the National Cross-Country XCM Series in Pucioasa, Romania. Although he only had five days of preparation on the MTB, the race held sentimental value, as he’s been competing in it for years, missing only a few editions.

The Race: Battling for the Podium

Last year, Gerhard surprised everyone by taking the top spot at this event. This year, his goal was to replicate that success. He held strong in the front group for the first 50km, but a technical mistake on a tricky descent caused him to lose contact with the top two riders. From there, the chase was on, and Gerhard pushed hard to catch up.

A Hard-Earned Podium

Despite the setback, Gerhard’s resilience paid off with a solid 3rd place finish in the elite men’s race. Given the minimal time spent training on the MTB, his podium finish was a remarkable achievement. Reflecting on the race, Gerhard expressed satisfaction with his performance and gratitude for the support he received.

Team Effort and Gratitude

Gerhard’s return to mountain biking was made possible thanks to the help of key people. Vali Tita lent him a bike, and Grz Bike Republic prepped it just in time for some training before the race. Gerhard also thanked the event organizers for hosting a fantastic 11th edition and appreciated Catalin Sprinceana for making it possible for him to line up at the start once again.
